The Canadian Candy Conspiracy

I am one of those people who when he notices something change it drives you nuts. I grew up being a fan of candy, most people were, but I actually had favourite companies. You named a candy and I could name the maker. I used to have 2 favourite companies, and it's safe to say they are two most people like, Wonka and Allan's confectionery. There were times where my friend and I would sit around and debate which of those two are better. Wonka had Nerds and Allan's had Fuzzy Peaches. This debate was never settled, it was just too difficult although if you ask me now-a-days, the answer is the same, they both are just too damn good. a couple of years ago probably 2007 I noticed something about Fuzzy Peaches, Sour Patch Kids and Sour Cherry Blasters, not only did they have new packaging but the bunny like Allan's logo was no more, now it was Maynard's. This bugged me, it made me wonder would the gummy now be more of a Wine Gum and less of the Fuzzy Peach? To my satisfaction the candy tasted more or less the same. I just assumed that Maynard's bought Allan and that was that. Recently on Canada Day I was in a convenience store where I noticed something cause my head to turn, Allan was back, but with their less popular but equally awesome candies. A new line of Allan was now available in new packaging offering "Watermelon slices", "Big Foot" and "Peach Slices". I was left wondering what this meant? Did they re-open? What happened to Maynard's and is the factory in Mississauga still open? As far as I can figure The Allan Company has fully separated from Cadbury and is now trying to re-establish it's name. This will be a bit of an uphill climb seeing as it lost the names of it's popular products, so I really think I will take charge and advise you all to follow suite. DO NOT BUY Fuzzy Peaches, Sour Patch Kids or Cherry Blasters instead purchase the Allan's Peach Slices, Cherry Slices and Sour Fruit Slices. That way we could help the rebirth of one of Canada's greatest candy company, and most importantly support the true creators of Fuzzy Peaches!

The problem is, it seems that the original recipes stayed with Maynard's - the new 'Peach Slices', at least, are an inferior recipe more similar to the knockoff generics. Such a shame, selling off our candy heritage to big multinational corporations. :(

It truly is sad. I feel Maynard's really just sucked the soul out of such a great brand, seeing that Gigantic "MAYNARD'S" logo just saddens me.

A number of years ago Kraft split its candy division into a separate company, Mondelez. It then seems they sold the brand name Allan and its manufacturing plants to a separate investor group but retained the names of the products and a couple other factories (this may have happened before the Kraft/Mondelez split). Currently Hershey owns the brand Allan and are trying to catch up in the market they used to have. I have bought both products and the Maynard’s brand almost certainly have the original recipes.

Also it seems Nestle is trying to get away from the Wonka branding, there’s a lot of products (Nerds, etc) that do not have a brand name on their package.

Guys, Im so glad I found this post..

My brother and I are candy conoisseurs, and we have noticed these changes, as well as many other candy changes in the Canadian market (probably US as well).

Fuzzy Peaches used to be sold with a little bit sour/foamy type fizz on them and a bit harder, staler texture (which we prefer). They had a little bit of a soapy taste to them almost, They were wonderful, the true original. They used to sell these in bulk at costco for like $5 for a big tub.

They got sold to Maynards, which to my relief, tasted similar (not exactly the same but close enough). The texture however was more soft, a little wetter as opposed to harder and drier, and more sweet sugar coating (not really any sour aspect anymore). They were decent though

Now, if you go have a Maynards Fuzzy Peach, they are wet, sticky, and taste disgusting. Like their formula completely changed for the worst. It is not the original similar to Allans fuzzy peach anymore. It is something else that is quite frankly terrible. I didnt even want to eat a small bite size pack. I believe this reformulation happened in the last 2 years or so.

To make things even more interesting, ive seen Allan peach slices out there too, but they don't taste anything like the original ones, so yes I believe they weren't allowed to use their old recipe, which Maynards has now probably locked away for good. The Allan ones taste generic, cheap, and just a bad overall. They are just trying to start the brand up again with different textures, flavors etc.

To make things more complicated, there is another brand now called Juby, they are in bulk bins in places like superstore and Walmart. Juby Peach slices, or Juby this or that. They are constantly confused with Allan or anything else that goes in bulk binsm to the point where I dont know if Im getting a Juby or an Allan in bulk sometimes. Either way, I stay away because they are both disgusting, Juby especially bad. I believe there are times hwen I confused a Juby for an Allan, because I dont remember allan ones being this awful.

Heres the older allan bulk ones, I dont even know if these can be found anymore, and they may have now bought allen. They are a new comer.

Great Blog!

On Instagram I am named under 'GummyWarz' - i spend all year buying gummies/jellies from around the world for a Christmas holiday showdown lol. Allan Candy in the 1990's was at its creative peak! I remember in addition to Sour Grape Blasters, Chery Blasters, and Fuzzy Peach, they had Sour pears, bananas, lemons, apples, oranges - incredible stuff.
2 Christmases ago during my first GummyWarz I had a box of Allan Peaches and a bag of Maynards - the Maynard flavor was superior...and very close to the original Allan flavor. Your blog is called the 'Candy Conspiracy' but at the time 2 yrs ago i called it the Great Heresy! lol. How dare my beloved Allan peaches be sold and altered so much.

KJ - i agree, I always thought Maynards shelved the original recipes. So disappointing too.

Hey guys, good news. if you have a Thrifty's near you, kind of like a "Whole Foods" fancy place, they have bulk Allan in every flavor. Sour Bobcats, peaches, sour blue foot, etc. They are the original recipe to my recollection with slight tweaks, but close enoight. They are a little thicker than the they used to be back in the 90s, probably something to do with not allowed legally to be the same size as Maynard's. I tried them all they are quite good. Enjoy

Thanks KJ - are you in BC? I am in Ontario and we don't have them from what I can tell.
Sour Bobcats!? sounds interesting!

If you are saying Allan's original is back, or near to the original - I am a VERY HAPPY man!

Thanks, I am on the hunt.
Mike

Hey again KJ. Just curious but what is your take on the Allan Grape Slices - i believe they came out around 1992/93 maybe. I get them at the local bulk store, but they are very sweet and artificial compared to the old very sour and VERY tasty 90s version. I would say it was one of the greatest gummies ever made.

Thanks,
mike

The old fuzzy peaches were amazing and since Maynard took over they are terrible. In recent years I have been loving Haribo brand candy (produced in Germany). They have just released "peaches" and they are very very similar to the original fuzzy peaches. I couldn't believe how good they are
